In my 40+ years servicing families of wealth, I can’t count the number of family members who have turned to me for a case that looked simple enough. You know where this is going… anyone who’s dealt with families of wealth knows how wildly complex, unpredictable and emotionally charged things can get.
While so many have come to me to just “iron out” the legal and financial aspects of their legacies, so many overlooked the nuclear reactor at the heart of it all – the human side of intergenerational transition. Among the few who have arrived with this realization on their own, fewer still have actually considered tackling it. Yes the family is often the one aspect that has escaped the founder’s vision for whom the issues inevitably appear to be the business and financial projections.
